About the Mile
The McMurtrie family was one of the pioneer families of McLaren Vale. In 1879 they took up residence in what is now the Salopian Inn, where they lived for 60+ years. In 1885 William McMurtrie fenced off two acres behind the now Salopian Inn and planted an orchard consisting of varied fruits, including wine grapes and almonds.
Supporting each others' endeavours by embracing the same community spirit inspired by the McMurtrie family in the late 1800s, eight good neighbours have joined together to create the McMurtrie Mile Experience.
Some of McLaren Vale’s most famous names in wine, food and art are nestled together on McMurtrie Road, including Pertaringa, Red Poles, Wirra Wirra, Hugh Hamilton, Primo Estate, Gemtree, Dowie Doole and the Salopian Inn, offering the very best of McLaren Vale on a single street. Similarly to McMurtrie Road being named in recognition for the family’s contribution to local community, the McMurtrie Mile venues today also recognise the value of local collaboration and working towards delivering a personalised, niche experience to visitors.
