Hugh Hamilton

Hero CD & vineyards.JPG

Hugh Hamilton’s cellar door is widely regarded by people in the region for having the most stunning views in McLaren Vale.

Hugh Hamilton is the 5th generation of the family that planted the first vineyards at Glenelg in 1837, less than one year after European settlement in South Australia. Hugh is regarded as the black sheep of the family who has stepped out on his own to establish his wine brand – Hugh Hamilton Wines. The business is now managed by the 6th Hamilton generation - Hugh’s daughter Mary.

The Black Sheep range of wines is sourced from Estate vineyards in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Hugh has a clear vision about his wines and grows his grapes to produce superior quality, flavour and colour instead of yield and his vines are almost dry grown with extensive bunch thinning. The white grapes are all hand picked and the Chardonnay is sourced from the oldest chardonnay vines in McLaren Vale. Small quantities of interesting grape varieties are Hugh’s thing. He is a master of a most reprobate range of varieties from the classics to the more eclectic like ‘The Oddball’ Saperavi, ‘The Scoundrel’ Tempranillo and ‘The Loose Cannon’ Viognier - this is no ordinary flock!
